Mikey on Monday: "All Hands On Deck!"

As we listen to Director Mikey on Monday all employees should remember two things.

The first thing is that between 800 to 1,000 of us won’t be working here this time next year based on the President’s budget for FY08. The LANS Board of Governors has informed the Acting NNSA Administrator that they cannot afford us in FY08. This info was provided by the Acting NNSA Administrators to his direct reports and the various site office have thus informed their contactors that approximately 1,000 Q-cleared LANL people will be available in FY08. If you have trouble believing this, ask Director Mikey on Monday. But listen carefully because his response will be LANS has no plans to RIF this year. He means FY07.

Second thing to remember, LANS is on the ropes, they have until June 1st to reach some level of improvement that Director Mikey will show as LANL’s short term goals on Monday. If DOE and the Congressional Investigation Committee are not satisfied that LANS has met these negotiated improvements by June 1st the contract will be terminated for cause based on the October incident and lack of performance.

I wonder if the arrogant LANS management team understands that we are all secretly or not-so-secretly wishing for their demise. LANL does have its problems but the accountability starts with the leadership or lack of it. The problems at LANL can be solved by competent leadership. Unfortunately, you can’t test for that in a urine sample!

Thanks, Anon. Now, what about asking Mikey about Mitchell's laptop and upper managers stabbing LANL in the back on the RRW? Oh, and what Mikey thinks about Bodman's assessment of the "arrogant scientists, engineers, physicists, and chemists" at LANL? (So many questions, so little Q&A time!)

Comments:
Saw LANL had 2 EO Lawrence award winners, along with some nice words from Bodman. Guess "arrogance" has its benefits.

The two winners are pretty top-notch. LANL and DOE have gotten a lot of good press from them. I don't believe either of the winners fit the bill of arrogant scientists. Most likely both will join the ranks of the Lab Fellow this year ... then they will become arrogant and useless.

Here's something funny: the chemistry winner was REFUSED job by Chemistry Division management when she was finished with her Director's PD (and had like 20+ pubs as a PD). Thankfully, DX Division saw that she was a keeper and hired her as a TSM. Guess who's laughing now?

To 11:38 am poster: Chemistry was glad to let her go. Just because you have 20+ pubs does not make you "a keeper"

At LANL, most people have a "job" - a list of things to be done sequentially, and reported on periodically, to satisfy a bureaucrat's requirement. Innovation is not usually a job requirement. Success in drudgery is...

pretty much describing my technical Group.

If one of us has the huevos to stand up and ask the hard questions....we should all stand in support, literally. So this brave soul is not standing alone, and they can't single him/her out for a thrashing. It is the best we can do. Lets Roll!

Pat the Dog asked,
Now, what about asking Mikey about Mitchell's laptop and upper managers stabbing LANL in the back on the RRW? Oh, and what Mikey thinks about Bodman's assessment of the "arrogant scientists, engineers, physicists, and chemists" at LANL?

I'm not sure about the laptop and the arrogant scientist, but I thought Mikey has put that middle question to rest -- at least Pedicini seemed satisfied that LANL upper management did not set out to stab him in the back.

Hey, John (Pedicini), a.k.a. San Giovanni de la Bomba:

Is it true? Are you satisfied with upper Lab management and the outcome of the RRW competition? Is the "hybrid design" with LLNL something you'd be proud to put in a reduced stockpile? If you answer this query at {patthedog@parrot-farm.net}, you'll get a fast top billing, I assure you. Mikey's meeting is coming up real soon...

LANS will not loose the contract on June 1st, they have an initial 7 year contract, 3-4 of those are for LANS to whip this place into shape. If they were only given a year they would have never bid on it to begin with. Don't know what you've been smoking but perhaps you should stop and "get a grip"

We are waiting to know if the first question was

WHEN WILL WE HAVE DAYCARE?
