FBI loses laptops with classified information

POSTED: 1:48 p.m. EST, February 12, 2007

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The FBI lost at least 10 laptop computers containing classified information during a four-year period ending in 2005, the Justice Department's inspector general has found.

The 10 were among the 160 laptops lost or stolen during a 44-month period ending September 30, 2005, Inspector General Glenn Fine reported. Along with the laptops, an equal numbers of weapons were also missing.

The report said the number of missing items, while still a problem, represents a sharp improvement since a 2002 audit, which found more than 300 laptops and 300 weapons lost or stolen during the previous 28-month period.

Fine said that among the 10 missing laptops known to contain sensitive or classified information was one that had identifying information on FBI personnel.

Several more lost or stolen laptops may also contain sensitive counterintelligence or counterterrorism information, the report said.

"Most troubling, we found that the FBI could not determine for 51 additional lost or stolen laptops whether they contained sensitive or classified information," the report said. "Seven of these 51 laptops were assigned to the counterintelligence or counterterrorism divisions."

The report said the FBI maintains more than 50,000 weapons and more than 20,000 laptops in its inventory.

In its response, the FBI agreed with several recommendations for maintaining tighter control on its weapons and laptops.

The bureau took issue with the count of missing firearms, saying 43 of the unaccounted weapons had been reported missing before the period covered by the report.

CNN's Terry Frieden contributed to this report.

Comments:
LANL cannot win at this 'spin' game, no matter what. Give it up. Even worse, we have thousands of staff, contractors and sub-contractors. Statistically, it just a matter of time before another "Jessica" screws up and we are ass-whipped, once again, by DOE, NNSA, Congress, the news media, and our own LANS management.

We've had over 7 years of this now, and the pattern should now be very clear for all to see. LANL is obviously on a downward track which will only get worse. If you have the option to leave, then take it now. You'll look back in several more years and be very glad you did.

I was asked by a LANS Manager to influence my community of the importance of security/safety. They (LANS Managers, scientists, etc.) could easily find another job anywhere in the country should something drastic happen to LANL.

I immediately assured the Manager that I would try my best but as I thought about it more, I realized that Deutch, Wen Ho Lee, John Mitchell, LANL Legal Counsel (when they sent classified e-mail to their home computer) were not natives of Northern New Mexico. Unfortunately, Jessica Quintana is this time. But due to human error and double standards, it could be anyone.

What's important to say to everyone, its ALL our responsibility! LANS Managers if you feel that the locals are responsible, you better do your homework babe!

What? No comments or observations about today's big All Hand's meeting?
The silence is a bit eery.

What's this about the LANL Legal Counsel sending classified e-mail to their home computer? Oh please tell who it was. Chris Chandler? Rich Marquez? Considering how the many people at Legal who have decided to play God and ruin the lives of select LANL staff, I would just love to know which of these high and mighty folks broke the rules ...
